LionHeart Owen Holiday Book Drive

20130716-164811.jpgHi Heart Family,

My Mommy is way too excited to wait till Turkey day… So, I had to come down to say “Hi” and let you know how you can help all of my friends at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles this holiday season. My Mommy and Daddy loved visiting my “Aunties” and “Uncles” at the Literally Healing Library every weekday while I was living in the hospital. The library is on the 6th floor of the hospital and they say it is so cool. There are tons of books! Every weekday Mommy and Daddy would visit the really nice book people and they would give them a book for free for me to keep for my very own library. My Mommy and Daddy would get so excited to read the stories to me. I loved it when they read to me. It was our favorite time of the day! They still look at those books a lot now and sometimes Mommy and Daddy sit at my room at the “H” word and read to me. My friends and I will snuggle up in the clouds in Heaven and listen to them. It’s still my favor…ite thing to do with them.

Well, my Mommy and Daddy loved it so much and they got lots of books cuz’ I was there for a long time. So, with your help they want to put some more books in there for other kiddos. They said that they need your help to make it happen. They will have some of their favorite books, some books for big kids, some books for the sick kids brothers and sisters, and some books to help kids when their hearts are sad and they have to leave the hospital without their brother or sister. It can be really confusing for some people why we have to go to heaven and can’t go to the “H” word. Mommy and Daddy want to get 5,000 books to the hospital by Christmas. Do you think we can do it? Cuz’ I know we can. Mommy said you can click here to buy a book and she will send reminders all the time so you don’t get forgetful. I watch you adults a lot and you forget the silliest things. My favorite thing is to watch the Mommy’s and Daddy’s look for their keys when they haven’t had that dark drink yet. It makes me laugh really hard.

I love you heart family and miss you so much. I hope you have a really nice day eating that big bird with your loved ones on Turkey Day. It sounds like a really fun day! I’m thankful for you and all the love you have for my heart brothers and sisters and all of the sick kiddos at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

See you every time the wind blows!

Owen’s gift has been received

20131115-190141.jpgOwen’s heart sister is a serious heart warrior! She has lived at CHLA since she was born. She has survived 6 surgical procedures, months on a Berlin heart, a heart transplant, a trach surgery and today conquered a Gtube surgery! She is the definition of a heart hero and we feel so blessed to be part of their journey!

Today we were able to give her the gift of books to celebrate Owen’s half birthday! We partnered with Literally Healing Library at CHLA and her gift showed up as she was coming back from her surgery! The books brought so much joy to both her and her parents and we loved that we were able to give them that gift today! The Library blessed us so many times during our time in the hospital. We can’t wait to partner with them again!

Happy day to all! May you be blessed tonight and throughout the weekend!

We love you heart family!

Happy 6 Month Birthday Owen

IMG_6687Day fifteen of the LionHeart Owen Grateful Hearts Project. Paying it forward for Owen and CHDs.

Today I am thankful for different perspectives, celebrations and the power to say yes!

Today our baby boy is 6 months old. Today our lil’ man should be eating solid foods and be sitting up by himself. We would have witnessed his first roll over and he would have started communicating with us with that precious baby babble. He was tiny, so he may not have fit into his 6 month clothes but he would have had many he grew out of and was sure to be well on his way to fitting into the extensive closet we have for him. We would be taking holiday photos and getting Christmas cards ready. Most of all we would have been celebrating! Celebrating the milestones, victories… Life.

But time stood still when our courageous lion took his last breath and gained his wings. He would no longer grow out of clothes and be too long for swaddle blanket. He would not go up on a size of diapers. Make the knees of his clothes filthy when he learned how to crawl. Get bumps and bruises when he tried to take his first steps. These milestones will never happen here on earth for our family. We get the memory of 16 weeks and all the milestones that happened in that short time. We get those memories to sustain us and to treasure until we meet with him again.

Sometimes the fact that our time was so short is daunting and carries a weight that is unbearable to hold and other times I have the strength to fight back and feel blessed that we were given 16 long weeks with our son. 112 days to get to know him. 2,688 hours to take in his every feature and savor his scent (even the stinky ones). 161,280 minutes to cherish and to make memories with. How blessed we are. I have met many families since losing Owen that have shared stories of their angel babies that gaind their wings way too soon. It breaks my heart. Many of them lost their baby before ever meeting their tiny warrior because of a miscarriage or a stillbirth. They did not get a minute and I got 161,280. How can I not feel blessed when I think of never getting a minute with my boy? Yes, our dreams were shattered and many of the memories we wanted to create never happened BUT we got to make some and how lucky I feel some days that God blessed us with that!

Today I am going to try not to dwell on the woulda, coulda, shoulda with Owen. Today I am going to celebrate our son’s first half birthday! How special it would have been if he were here! See there I go woulda again! Bear with me… I pictured celebrating our children’s half birthdays! Let’s face it… Some years it’s hard to get through half a year and it is reason enough for me to celebrate! I pictured us having one gift, one cupcake and an entire day for our little one to be his/hers. They could do whatever they wanted within reason of course! It would be a full day of “yes” for them with a tiny celebration at the end of the day. A perfect teaser to get through the 2nd half of the year until celebrating their next birthday! In an effort to fill my heart with joy today we will be celebrating just that way… in pure Alissa fashion! There will be one gift… but I am not sure who will be getting it… Stay tuned for that surprise! There will be cupcakes and pizza and lots of yes! We will tell or selves yes to however we feel led to celebrate, however we feel led to mourn, and however we feel left to…. Just be!

Please help us celebrate Owen today! We know he is dancing away with Jesus as they celebrate the miracles they are performing here on earth and that he is no longer a prisoner to CHDs and childhood cancer!

Just a reminder… Everyday since November 1 I have been posting a photo of our sweet Owen for our LionHeart Owen Grateful Hearts Project. If you would like to follow this journey please visit our Facebook page at

We love you heart family! Thank you for being by our side every step of the way! We can’t wait to tell you all about what LionHeart Owen has in store for the holidays! The big reveal is on Thanksgiving day!

DSC_0005We are humbled and beyond blessed by the support we received last night at the First Annual LionHeart Owen Bunco Night. Over 75 women came and supported our warriors and played Bunco! The energy and joy in the room filled my soul. We could …feel Owen smiling from Heaven and so proud of his heart family for raising awareness and standing up to CHDs.
We wanted to give a special thank you to the volunteers that helped make the night such a huge success. We could not have done it without the generous giving of your time and talents! We also had several vendors join the event and showcase their seasonal lines! Their generosity was so incredible and they have committed to leaving their stores open for several days to continue the event sales! They will be giving a portion of their proceeds to support LionHeart Owen! We could not be more grateful!
Please take a moment to visit their sites and put a dent in your holiday shopping! Thank you heart Family and we can’t wait to partner with all of you at the next event!!

Pay it forward for LionHeart Owen

20131101-071836.jpggrateful – Appreciative of benefits received; thankful.

November is a month to be grateful (we should have hearts of gratitude all year long but that’s not what this post is about). So, in November we celebrate gratitude! I have said it many many times, it was a miracle we got spend 16 weeks with Owen and we believe that Owen was put here for a short time to teach us something. He taught us love, joy, strength, and gratitude, among many other things.

Owen never got to see a November here with us. He will never jump in the fall leaves, see the first snow, sigh a big sigh of relief that weather in the desert will now be awesome till end of May! He never got to wear a big puffy jacket, feel the cold on his face and warm it up with a hot cocoa, he never got to do so many things that are given to us everyday.

This November I am asking everyone to join us and have a heart of gratitude by paying it forward for LionHeart Owen. Pay it forward to yourself by doing the things you have been putting off and find joy or wake up with a smile and keep it there all day. You deserve it! Challenge yourself and pay it forward to a friend. Bring them dinner unexpectedly or surprise them with coffee and a treat. Go big! While you are buying that coffee, pay it forward to the stranger behind you in line and buy their coffee. Donate to your favorite charity; if you need help picking one I know just the one for you! Remember Owen in every act and tell his story.

In honor of Owen I will be posting pictures of his little life from the beginning every day during the month of November. I may go into December but I want a daily reminder of my gratitude and hopefully his face will offer the same reminder to all of you!
